You drive a Ferrari Testarossa through various stages each with a checkpoint at the end of the stage that must be reached within the time limit. The player can choose which route to take through the game. The driver also has a choice of three different themes to listen to while driving.

If the Start button is pressed while approaching a checkpoint the following message will be displayed Program by Yu Suzuki 1986 Sep. That this easter egg will not work on all versions of the game, however.
The three of the four soundtracks are called Magical Sound Shower, Passing Breeze and Splash Wave, all of which can be selected at the start of play. The final tune is called Last Wave and it is only played on the highscore board.
The game was converted to the Spectrum, Amstrad, Commodore, Atari ST and Amiga computers by US Gold now Eidos in 1987. These home computer versions were supplied with an extra cassette featuring the arcade music.
An Out Run Soundtrack CD was also released.
Out Run was the second Sega release to feature SuperScaler technology - the first was Space Harrier.
There are four different style cabinets a car shaped sitdown which uses a hydraulics system to move the cabinet about during game play with a 25 monitor , a second big sitdown version, with no hydraulics and simpler car and simple left to right movement with a 20 monitor, a deluxe upright with custom plastics, and a mini upright.
The game can be converted to Turbo Out Run with the relevant upgrade kit.
