Animated players compete by throwing horseshoes towards a stake in the ground. Points are awarded for horseshoes that touch the post. Higher scores are achievied by getting a "ringer" which is when the horseshoe hooks onto the post, swings around and makes a ringing sound this is where the term got its name.

The PCB is unusually small. It consists of two boards: a main and a sub board. Each board is six inches by six inches and the main board has the JAMMA edge connector on it. The two boards are sandwiched together and together have a total thickness of 1 3/4 inches. There are two sets of DIP switches with eight switches on each.
