Star Wars Arcade Description

This is a 3-D space shooter with two-player capability. In all stages, you fly an X-Wing into combat, with an ultimate goal of destroying the Death Star. The music is from the original movie soundtrack and some dialogue is from the films.

Star Wars Arcade was produced by Sega in 1993.

Sega released 591 different machines in our database under this trade name, starting in 1936.

Other machines made by Sega during the time period Star Wars Arcade was produced include Alien 3: The Gun, Dark Edge, Mazin Saga, Out Runners, Sega Mega Play, Golden Axe: The Revenge Of Death Adder, Bio-Hazard Battle, Burning Rival, Holosseum, and Awesome Rat.

Cabinet Information

The cabinet consists of three pieces: The seats, which are bolted to the control panel; the control panel which houses the game boards and the controls, and a 50-inch rear-projection display that is connected to the control panel by two cables.

Game Introduction

Even though it's called "Star Wars," it's really set during "Return of the Jedi." Admiral Ackbar briefs you on missions leading up to the destruction of the second Death Star.

Game Play

The game is best with two players. One is the pilot, who controls the speed and direction of the vehicle; the pilot can only shoot the center of the screen. The other player is the gunner, who can target a much larger area on-screen.

When playing a one-player game, you must be the pilot.

There are four stages of gameplay.

First, destroy a squadron of TIE Fighters in an asteroid field.

Second, pilot your X-Wing through a Super Star Destroyer and destroy it by blowing up a reactor. You are rewarded with a 3-D cutscene showing the Star Destroyer exploding.

Next, destroy a squadron of TIE Fighters on the surface of the Death Star.

Finally, fly into the unfinished Death Star and blow it up it by destroying the main reactor. You are rewarded with another 3-D cutscene as well as two 2-D animations.

Miscellaneous

The attract mode lists a copyright of 1993 for Sega, and a copyright of 1994 for Lucasfilm; the marquee and serial number tag both say 1994.

VAPS Arcade/Coin-Op Star Wars Arcade Census

There are 12,128 members of the Video Arcade Preservation Society / Vintage Arcade Preservation Society, 9,620 whom participate in our arcade census project of games owned, wanted, or for sale. Census data currently includes 163,001 machines (6,848 unique titles).

Uncommon - There are approximately 16 known instances of this machine presumably owned by our current and past members. More are likely owned by non-members. 5 of these machines are owned by our active Star Wars Arcade collectors. And of these, 4 are original dedicated machines, and one is a set of circuit boards which a collector could put into a generic case if desired.

Wanted - There is one active VAPS member currently looking for Star Wars Arcade.

At any given time, our active members are listing on VAPS on average of 4,400 games they are looking for, and 3,600 games for sale.

This game ranks a 3 on a scale out of 100 (100 = most often seen, 1=least common) in popularity based on census ownership records.

This game ranks a 2 on a scale out of 100 (100 = most often wanted, 1=least common) in popularity based on census want list records.

Rarity and Popularity independently are NOT necessarily indications of value. [More Information]

The sound test mode reveals that the voice samples are available in Japanese as well as English.
