Game Introduction

Ford, Mitsubishi, Subaru, Renault, Lancia Delta and a Stratos, Toyota Corolla and GT4 are the fabulously polygonized rally cars in this game. With dirt/dust/snow texture maps and glowing brake discs, the cars are the most detailed cars ever seen in a video game. Notice the car body's reflection, window reflections and also the back lights of the cars.

Game Play

Race your car around the tracks and earn extra time by reaching checkpoints. There are two modes: Practice and Championship. In Practice mode, you race against one or more cars by selecting one of four tracks and racing a number of laps. In Championship mode you race an equal number of laps per course and each successive track becomes more difficult.

You compete against 14 other cars that are either computer or player controlled. There is also a View Change button that lets the player choose between two different driving perspectives: behind the car and inside the car. The tracks are as follows: Desert (easy), Mountain (medium), Snow (expert), and Riviera (Final).

Cheats, Tricks, Bugs, and Easter Eggs

The first released DX has slower cars and different paint on the Toyota and Ford, is a little less polished in graphical terms than the later twin version. The twin can display the www.segarally.com text, the DX does not even have the option, but has a nicer motif on the Ford Escort (white/orange).

A trick in all versions is when you hold the View button down during play, the camera angle freezes. That is to say when you turn the steering wheel, your car turns and you spin the car in all directions admiring it, but your race is lost.

The secret 'cone hit' stage in the Riviera track can be unlocked by hitting the two cones in the last turn and turning back to go right into the tunnel that appears. Once inside, hit as many cones you can before the 'sub-time' runs out.

Trivia

There are more versions of Sega Rally 2 that Sega used as test versions early on. There is an Australian version too that I have seen.

Cabinet Information

The standard upright uses Sega's standard steel construction. There are also the Twin and DX model cabinets. The games contain an additional handbrake that is needed in the tight hairpin turns.

Conversion

The Model3 step 2 platform has a few other games on it that are interchangable by swapping ROM boards. However, this is not like swapping a NeoGeo cart since it requires some work and skill.

Rarity and Popularity independently are not necessarily indications of value. [More Information]

Technical

Game settings are adjusted in the test mode after the Test button has been pressed. A 500W-100VAC servo motor provides the force feedback steering. The game also has a View change button and a hand brake lever.

An important note about the Model3 sound system: Model3 has four separate channels for sound, usually two front and two rear. All M3 games does, however, not utilize all four. An additional MPEG-PCB comes with almost all M3 games, which usually has four more channels. These are then mixed into the primary channels and put out into the two or four speakers.

The woofer audio is derived from the existing channels and is not a separate channel. The mix is different between the upright, Twin and DX model games due to the use of the MPEG PCBs. The upright does not use one of these boards and the Twin and DX cabinets have different revisions of this hardware.

Fixes

To be able to connect several machines togeather for multiplay (DX machines), there was a twin-kit upgrade released wich included a completely new romset and a link-PCB. The same goes for Scud Race.
