Rampart was produced by Atari Games in 1990.

Atari Games released 86 different machines in our database under this trade name, starting in 1984.

Game Play

Rampart has three modes of game play, depending on how many players are in the game:

In a one-player game, the player has to defend his castle from an armada of sailing ships. There are two or three types of ships, each type denoted by the color and size of the ship. The larger the ship, the more shots it takes to sink it.

A two-player game presents the players a choice of two different game modes:

  • A harbor mode where the play area is divided into thirds. Two-thirds of the play area is land (one-third for each player), and the last third is dedicated to water. At the start of each round, the players are given a number of ships in the harbor depending on the amount of land under the player's control.
  • A river mode where the play area is divided in half by a river. The players use their cannons to lay seige to the other player's castle(s).
  • A three-player game is identical to a two-player game river mode, except that the play area is divided into three equal sections by an inverted Y-shaped river system.

    VAPS Arcade/Coin-Op Rampart Census

There are 12,007 members of the Video Arcade Preservation Society / Vintage Arcade Preservation Society, 9,523 whom participate in our arcade census project of games owned, wanted, or for sale. Census data currently includes 161,736 machines (6,804 unique titles).

Very Common - There are approximately 97 known instances of this machine presumably owned by our current and past members. More are likely owned by non-members. 42 of these machines are owned by our active Rampart collectors. And of these, 20 are original dedicated machines, 6 are conversions in which game circuit boards (and possibly cabinet graphics) have been placed in (and on) another game cabinet, and 16 are only circuit boards which a collector could put into a generic case if desired.

For Sale - There is one active VAPS member with a Rampart machine for sale. There is one active VAPS member with an extra Rampart circuit board for sale.

Wanted - There are 9 active VAPS members currently looking for Rampart.

At any given time, our active members are listing on VAPS on average of 4,400 games they are looking for, and 3,600 games for sale.

This game ranks a 29 on a scale out of 100 (100 = most often seen, 1=least common) in popularity based on census ownership records.

This game ranks a 28 on a scale out of 100 (100 = most often wanted, 1=least common) in popularity based on census want list records.

Rarity and Popularity independently are NOT necessarily indications of value. [More Information]

    Technical

Two versions were made available: a three-player trackball dedicated version (1990) and two-player joystick kit (1991).

The PCBs are identical except for the ROMs, one GAL and some of the inputs have pull-down resistors instead of pull-ups.

The joystick version is straight JAMMA, while the trackball version reuses the joystick axes as the trackball inputs clock-up/left and direction-down/right. This is the pseudo-standard way a trackball is used in a JAMMA pinout.
