Quartet 2 Description

Human characters collect guns and power-ups to destroy a variety of robots in a space base. Defeat the boss character and collect the key to unlock the base's door and move on to the next level. Up to two people may join in on the fun.

Quartet 2 was produced by Sega in 1986.

Sega released 591 different machines in our database under this trade name, starting in 1936.

Other machines made by Sega during the time period Quartet 2 was produced include Alex Kidd: The Lost Stars, Dump Matsumoto, Alien Syndrome, Body Slam, Action Fighter, Bank Panic, 4-D Warriors, Albegas, Choplifter, and Angel Kids.

Cabinet Information

This game was only released as a conversion kit for two-player cabinets. Sometime during production, Sun Corporation of America changed the colors of the kit, so there are two different color marquees for Quartet 2 (one blue and one turquoise).

Conversion

This game can be back converted to Quartet by swapping ROM boards. This conversion will require a Quartet wiring harness, however, since the ROM boards determine the game board's control pinouts. Additionally, both Quartet and Quartet 2 can be converted to or from Body Slam, by replacing the ROM board, and several ROMs on the main board.

Game Introduction

This game was relased shortly after the dedicated Quartet. Quartet 2 is not a sequel but rather a conversion kit that could be placed in two-player cabinets. The only real difference between the two game is Quartet 2 allows up to two players to choose from the four available characters.

The game has side-scrolling action and a Gauntlet-like join-in type play. The four characters each have a different name and wear a different color. They are Joe (yellow), Mary (red), Lee (blue) and Edgar (green).

VAPS Arcade/Coin-Op Quartet 2 Census

There are 12,084 members of the Video Arcade Preservation Society / Vintage Arcade Preservation Society, 9,585 whom participate in our arcade census project of games owned, wanted, or for sale. Census data currently includes 162,631 machines (6,830 unique titles).

Uncommon - There are approximately 13 known instances of this machine presumably owned by our current and past members. More are likely owned by non-members. 6 of these machines are owned by our active Quartet 2 collectors. And of these, 6 are only circuit boards which a collector could put into a generic case if desired.

Wanted - No active members have added this machine to their wish list.

At any given time, our active members are listing on VAPS on average of 4,400 games they are looking for, and 3,600 games for sale.

This game ranks a 4 on a scale out of 100 (100 = most often seen, 1=least common) in popularity based on census ownership records.

Rarity and Popularity independently are NOT necessarily indications of value. [More Information]

Technical

The Quartet and Quartet 2 control pinouts differ due to the varience in the number of simultaneous players between games. The wiring for Quartet is set up so that each player is required to use a specific set of joysticks and buttons, while Quartet 2 allows both players to select whatever characters they would like to play during the game.

Trivia

Sun Corporation only made a handful of games besides this title. Their parent company, Sun Electronics (who later changed their name to Sun Corporation of Japan), made games like Arabian and Kangaroo. In 1989, Sun Corporation of America changed its name to SunSoft and then left the arcade game market to concentrate on creating software titles for home console systems like the Nintendo 64.
