Commando Description

You are a highly trained solder whose mission is to annihilate the enemy and rescue important captives. To do this you must destroy the enemy base, which is said to be impregnable. Your weapons consist of a machine gun with unlimited shots and a limited supply of hand grenades that may be replenished by stealing from the enemy.

Commando was produced by Capcom in 1985.

Capcom released 228 different machines in our database under this trade name, starting in 1984.

Other machines made by Capcom during the time period Commando was produced include Exed Exes, 1942 (PlayChoice), Ghosts 'n Goblins, Gun Smoke, Makaimura, 1942, HiGeMaru - Pirate Ship, Son Son, Vulgus, and Pirate Ship HigeMaru.

Older ROM revisions allowed the player to hide behind trees or other obstacles indefinitely. A new ROM revision - U3-F at 8M and U4-F at 9M - was released to allow the enemy characters to hurl hand grenades at the soldier when he is hiding.

At the end of each area, when the enemy soldiers are pouring out of the gate from their compound, move your commando to the bottom of the screen and shoot down. Your shots will come down from the top of the screen, killing the soldiers as they come out of the gate.

Conversion

Since the game uses the standard CAPCOM pinout, games such as Avengers, Legendary Wings or Exed Exes can be swapped in without modification. The game was licensed to Data East who also included a Capcom-to-Data East pinout adaptor board with Commando, so it should be possible to play any of these games in a Ring King or Battle Lane Vol. 5 machine.

Game Play

Use the joystick to maneuver the player, the fire button to shoot the machine gun and the grenade button to hurl hand grenades. Dodge all bullets and grenades and do not collide with the enemy soldiers!

Extra lives are awarded for exceeding certain scores. Score more points for destroying enemy leaders and their headquarters. Bonus points are awarded for rescuing captives.

The arch bridge is a dangerous spot so watch for attacks from above. Be careful of trucks and jeeps that may try to run over you. Do not fall into rivers or ponds. Trees, walls and other obstacles may be used for cover.
