Game Introduction

Tac/Scan is a very unique game in that you control just how many resources in this case, ships are put into play. You start with seven individual ships in play. Those ships can be lost in any of the three stages by hitting a tunnel, getting shot, or hitting the enemy. You are able to "collect" and earn these ships back as the game progresses. You can drop down to one ship in the game, but still have four "back-up" ships but do not loose the one ship in play, otherwise your game is over. This is unique to other games that give you ships sequentially.

In the first stage, you pilot your ships through waves of attacking enemies. You can either fire upon them, or "tac" your ships around them. The second stage is much like the first, except that it is from a 3-D perspective from behind your ships. In the third stage, you pilot your ship down a space warp tunnel. You will lose any ships that touch the side of the tunnel.

Miscellaneous

The game was also released in a cocktail cabinet.

VAPS Arcade/Coin-Op Tac/Scan Census

There are 12,007 members of the Video Arcade Preservation Society / Vintage Arcade Preservation Society, 9,523 whom participate in our arcade census project of games owned, wanted, or for sale. Census data currently includes 161,736 machines (6,804 unique titles).

Very Common - There are approximately 60 known instances of this machine presumably owned by our current and past members. More are likely owned by non-members. 23 of these machines are owned by our active Tac/Scan collectors. And of these, 20 are original dedicated machines, 1 is a conversion in which game circuit boards (and possibly cabinet graphics) have been placed in (and on) another game cabinet, and 2 are only circuit boards which a collector could put into a generic case if desired.

Wanted - Popular - There are 13 active VAPS members currently looking for Tac/Scan.

At any given time, our active members are listing on VAPS on average of 4,400 games they are looking for, and 3,600 games for sale.

This game ranks a 16 on a scale out of 100 (100 = most often seen, 1=least common) in popularity based on census ownership records.

This game ranks a 25 on a scale out of 100 (100 = most often wanted, 1=least common) in popularity based on census want list records.

Rarity and Popularity independently are NOT necessarily indications of value. [More Information]

Fixes

There is a Sega XY FAQ that contains repair tips for this and many other games.

As with all of Sega's vector games, the Electrohome color vector monitor used for this game has a notorious tendency to catch fire. It is unknown what to do to prevent this.
