Star Fire Description

Fly around in space shooting TIE-fighter shaped ships. Occasionally an Exidy mother ship will fly by that you can destroy for big points. Your team (do not shoot them) flew in X-Wings with their S-foils closed.

Cheats, Tricks, Bugs, and Easter Eggs

Entering the initials "SKO" will cause the game to print "HI SUSAN". Entering the initials "DBR" will cause the game to print "HI DAVE".

Game Play

The first wave of ships is red, the next is green and then finally blue. The enemy shoots big, white energy balls at you. If you get hit, a message on the heads-up display prints: "GOT YOU!". Your weapon is four X-wing style lasers that originate in the four corners of the screen and meet together at the sight in the center. The lasers are very slow and it takes a few seconds between the time you push the fire button to the time they hit the target in the site. Timing is a crucial factor when playing this game. Hitting a target flashes a message on the heads-up display: "GOT HIM!". Near the end of the game you will see a ship that looks like a Viper from Battlestar Galactica. It has "Exidy" printed on the top back wing. If you shoot it the heads up display will read: "GOT US!"

For Sale - There is one VAPS member with a Star Fire machine for sale. VAPS members are totally independent of VAPS and the International Arcade Museum, and we are unable to recommend, endorce, or guarantee any person or company selling games or game parts.

Wanted - There is one VAPS member currently looking for Star Fire.

This game ranks a 3 on a scale out of 100 (100 = most often seen, 1=least common) in popularity based on census ownership records.

This game ranks a 2 on a scale out of 100 (100 = most often wanted, 1=least common) in popularity based on census want list records.

Rarity is NOT necessarily an indication of value. [More Information]

Technical

The board consists of two PCBs: a main board for processing and a daughterboard for the EPROMs and sound. These boards were connected at 90 degrees via edge connector.

Trivia

This was the first cockpit game, but it was also released as an upright. Apparently, there was a sequel called Rolling Star Fire that was basically the same game mounted on a barrel-rolling chassis with some souped-up game play (radar, "normal" color, etc.).

This is the first arcade coin-operated video game to maintain a high score table by accepting and displaying the names of winning players.

Fixes

The edge connector that joins the daughter board to the main board is a common source of problems.
