According to Sega: 'After a decade of arcade and home console hits, with years of popularity behind it, one of the best fighting games to ever grace the 2D gaming world is back! This new version will feature some of the old missed characters from previous KOF's and will also feature new fighting modes such as Guard Break mode, Max X 2 mode and Super Cancel mode. This version has returned to the original one-on-one fighting system with no tagging or striking.

KOF has had many features in the past but not like the ones NEOWAVE have all put together. The characters have all been given completely new colours. Also there is a whole new 5th Button, never before experienced in any KOF.'

The first SNK game on Sammy's arcade system,Atomiswave. Some new features include a triple mode play system (consisted of SUPER CANCEL mode for a three stocks power gauge and the ability to cancel certain special moves into certain others,GUARD BREAK mode for a two stocks power gauge and the abilities to crush opponent's defense and defend with block damage a la Garou Mark of The Wolves,and MAX2 mode for a one stock power gauge and the use of your character's "Hidden Super Desperation Move"),five-button setup (the fifth button is used for the "Heat Mode" in which trades most of your vitality gauge energy for added attacking power),and new 3D backgrounds. All fights are 3-on-3. Most of the characters from The King of Fighters 2002 retained their incarnations of that game. Although there are 36 regular characters in the lineup instaed of 39. Similar to The King of Fighters 2002 roster with the following exceptions:

*The Japan team is still retained,but not including Kyo's evil counterpart named Kusanagi (which was originated from The King of Fighters 2002 and 2003). *The fighting gals team is now returned to the classic "blonde/brunette/redhead" lineup from The King of Fighters 94 and 95. With Mai (redhead) and Yuri (brunette) still in the team,King (blonde) was now replaced May Lee. *The Korea team now includes Jhun Moon in place of Kim Kaphwan. Kim Kaphwan is now a hidden character. *The 2000 team (Vanessa,Seth,and Ramon) and the 2001 team (Kula,K9999,and Angel) are removed. Although Kula is now in the All Stars team alongside Saisyu Kusanagi and Shingo Yabuki. Also Ramon and Vanessa are now hidden characters. *The Art of Fighting 2 version of Geese Howard is the final boss instead of Omega Rugal.
